When one of the greatest thinkers of Christian Europe, Erasmus of Rotterdam, was looking for a German expression in order to most succinctly express what the Latin term educatio means, he helped himself using the new word Bildung. The root of the word that we translate into Czech as education is the word Bild, that is, image. This fact implicitly refers to the biblical concept of man created ‘in the image of God’ (Gen 1:27)...

Quixote’s Pilgrimage to Beauty as a Message for the Present

Helena Zbudilová

Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(2):35-51 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.026

The article expands the existing literary interpretations of Cervantes’ Don Quixote (interpretation of the character as a symbol and as the first existential hero of world literature), adding a philosophical-anthropological (especially phenomenological) and theological interpretation. The text deals with the aesthetic, ethical, and religious reflection on the character of Don Quixote through the prism of a new ‘reading’ of the novel and its protagonist in the spirit of the Catholic line of interpretation and the phenomenon of beauty. The interpretation of Don Quixote as a knight, saint, and fool is focused on the perspective of realising...

Rethinking the Approach to Education by Reversing the Transcendentals and Recalling Another

Stuart Nicolson

Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(2):52-71 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.027

The three transcendentals of truth, goodness, and beauty, originally being understood as signs of God in our world, have for centuries been an important element in education, providing structure for education. However, through rationalist thinking they became subjectivised, which has led to negative developments in education such as increasing individualisation and disinterest in Christianity, particularly in postmodern society. Based partly on the author’s experiences of awe and wonder in teaching children, this paper proposes several changes in educational approach and how we understand the transcendentals partly through the work of Hans Urs...

On the Phenomenon of Play in Education – School as Play?

Stanislav Suda

Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(2):95-107 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.030

In contemporary pedagogy, understood as a social science, the term ‘play’ is used relatively extensively. It is interpreted as a targeted pedagogical or didactic tool. An alternative and inspiring view of the phenomenon of game in terms of philosophical psychology or phenomenological philosophy can be found in authors with a Christian background. This article wants to point out the argumentative and philosophical contradictions of these currents regarding the understanding of play – especially with regard to the increase in personal knowledge, emotional balance, socialisation, or the influence on the cultivation of self-reflection...

Ludvík Dřímal

Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(2):108-116 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.031

In 2020, a new Directory for Catechesis was published, which includes changes both in the theory of catechesis and especially in catechesis, taking into account the changes in contemporary society. This article presents this document, addressed primarily to bishops and other persons responsible for to bishops responsible for catechesis in the dioceses of the Czech and Moravian ecclesiastical provinces. It uses a method of critical analysis, leading to the conclusion that the document demonstrates some efforts to incorporate the current papal magisterium into the catechesis of the Church. This represents a great challenge to a radical renewal of catechesis,...

Differentiation of the theological conception of the human person and personality in relation to selected approaches of empirical functionalism

Ondřej Havelka

Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(2):117-132 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.033

The article deals with the problem of the theological conception of the human person and personality, two seemingly competing models of the concept of the person, and the risks of some lines of thought of empirical functionalism in relation to the dilemmas of Christian applied ethics from the perspective of theological-ethical principle of personality. In this thesis we follow the methodological three steps proposed by the Second Vatican Council: 1. to see (chapter two in the structure of the thesis); 2. to judge (chapter three); 3. to act (chapter four). The shift in theme is the distinction of the ontological level of the human person from the actualization...

The study of theology as an endeavour for human development; The concept of theology at the Institute of Ecumenical Studies and at Jabok

Ondřej Fischer, Petr Jandejsek, Martin Vaňáč

Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(2):133-149 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.032

The authors of the article reflect on the nature and significance of the study of theology in institutions that are more concerned with general human development than with the study of theology per se. Their almost twenty years of work at the Institute of Ecumenical Studies in Prague and at the Jabok College of Higher Education and the changing place of faith in society allow them to capture the pragmatic aspects of the study under review, in which historical lines intersect with theological reflection and pastoral perspectives. Their starting point for this multidisciplinary exploration is Comenius' philosophy of education and his concept of theology...
