We Are Strangers Before You and Sojourners, As All Our Fathers Were' (1 Chr 29:15). The Old Testament's Contribution to the Ethical Issue of Migration
Adam Mackerle
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(2):31-46 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.033
The paper discusses the Old Testament's witness on the issue of migration. It provides an overview of the most basic relevant texts and divides them into two groups: the witness of Israel as a migrant and the witness of Israel as a host. Without claiming completeness, the paper attempts to summarise in what sense texts can contribute to contemporary ethical discourse on the topic of migration. From the social-economic point of view the refugees are a category of people who are to be helped, but who at the same time pose a threat to the religious integrity of Israel. In a social-cultural and religious sense the Old Testament therefore requires and at...

Roman Míčka
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(2):65-83 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.035
The paper entitled 'The Problem of "World Political Authority" in the Broader Context of Catholic Social Thought' discusses the concept of 'world political authority' formulated in the social teaching of the Church, with reference to the 'migration crisis' and the 'cosmopolitan principle'. It presents and reflects upon the broad debate in the context of Catholic social thought regarding the character of global political organization and the concept of global governance, especially in the last twenty years. It concludes that the social teaching of the Church identifies 'world political authority' especially with the United Nations, rather than...

The study presents selected elementary results of the social investigation Christians and Refugees, which was realised in the Czech Republic in August 2016. It is essentially a theological study, which makes use of certain elements of social scientific methodology. In the first part the theoretical foundation of the investigation is elaborated, of which its basic lens is the theology of signs of the times. In the second part, selected findings of the survey are presented, which are then theologically interpreted...
The Phenomenon of Migration from the Point of View of the Idea of Developing the Common Home Contained in Catholic Social Teaching, Especially as Formulated by Popes Benedict XVI and Francis
Jindřich Šrajer
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(2):126-137 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.039
The study reflects upon the phenomenon of migration from the point of view of Catholic social teaching. It aims to view the contemporary problem of migration at the beginning of the third millennium, especially through the eyes of two Popes - Benedict XVI and Francis - based on reflecting upon two principles engaged by Catholic social teaching to justify its attitude towards migration. One is the cosmopolitan principle (the idea of a common home, one world), and the other is the political principle. In the Popes' view, accounting for the idea of the unity of the human race and the requirement of universal brotherhood is a fundamental idea, or rather...
World War II and the Issue of Refugeeism Focusing on the Diocese of České Budějovice in Light of Archive Materials from the Episcopal Archive
Martin Weis
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(2):149-159 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.041
World War II brought incomparable suffering to many millions of humans. It is impossible to calculate how many people were forced to leave their homes by the military operations or decisions of statesmen and were either forcibly deported or preferred to emigrate. This study recalls the issue of refugeeism associated with this tragic segment of human history from a specific viewpoint, viz. refugeeism as part of the history of the diocese of České Budějovice from 1938 up to 1947 in light of archive materials from the episcopal archive. It engages authentic documents to show how the issue of refugeeism was perceived and frequently also personally experienced...

Vojtěch Mašek
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(2):210-226 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.045
Based on interpreting important currents within contemporary Catholic economic ethics, the paper examines different approaches to overcoming the deficiency of economic rationality in the sphere of morality and the moral deficiency in the sphere of market economy. In that way, it searches for an answer to the key question of whether and in what form economics ethics is possible in contemporary global economic practice and how Catholic social thinking and tradition can specifically contribute to it.

Ondřej Stulík
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(2):242-258 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.047
The paper deals with the political philosophy of Erasmus of Rotterdam in his work Education of a Christian Prince and focuses on the relationship of the concepts of 'goodness', 'wisdom' and 'power' with respect to the rulership of a king in the milieu of a monarchy as a system of government. The paper aims to present a good rulership as a type of a political system and the role of the king as an agent who has political power at his disposal with respect to the moral good as a principle. The methods employed were framing and content analysis. The main finding is the appeal for the king's responsibility for service rendered to his subjects, whereby Erasmus...

Vojtěch Svoboda
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(2):271-283 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.049
This study deals with the theological reflection of sport. In the first part it presents the way in which sport was evaluated by John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The information on this point comes mainly from the speeches, letters and other texts in which the two Popes devoted extensive space to sport. The second part of the study presents the answers to questions concerning the body and sport, which the author presented to a selected specimen of theologians in the Czech Republic. The study aims to provide the possibility to compare these two types of statements. The papal statements and the addressed theologians mostly agree on the question of how...
Churchly or Worldly Diakonia?
Karel Šimr
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(2):299-315 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.051
The paper attempts to reflect on the subject of 'worldliness' and 'churchliness' of diakonia from a theological standpoint based on the example of the development of the Diaconia of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. It first lays out two different attitudes present at the inception of this institution in 1989. The two attitudes are subsequently placed in the context of the theological discussion of diakonia in the German Protestant environment since the second half of the twentieth century. Engaging N. Luhmann's Social Systems Theory, which conceives diakonia as a function of the religious system in relation to other subsystems of society,...
