Gaudium et Spes and Francis
Paul Michael Zulehner
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):24-32 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.006
The paper first presents two points of view on the Second Vatican Council: the view of Pope Benedict XVI and the view of Pope Francis. Then it discusses the so-called Pact of the Catacombs signed in 1965 and shows how the themes of its three main parts - the personal life of the bishop, the apostolic pastoral ministry and the Church's internal culture - correspond with the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium and with the life and deeds of Pope Francis. The following notes to the second part illustrate that Pope Francis, during his pontificate, puts the Constitution Gaudium et Spes into practice...

Gaudium et Spes and the Cultural Paradigm of the 21st Century
Helmut Renöckl
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):53-63 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.009
The article first presents the cultural paradigm discussed in the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes. Then it deals with important cultural paradigm changes within the 50 years since the end of the Council, always with respect to the relationship between "Church" and "world". Finally, the text focuses on the cultural paradigm of the 21st century and the contribution of the Church and theology to the structure of society based on human dignity.
The Image of Man in Gaudium et Spes and Its Practical Interpretation by Pope Francis
János Wildmann
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):72-81 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.011
The paper first reviews the most important statement of Chapter 1 of the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes on the "Dignity of the Human Person". Next, with reference to the topic of atheism and religious freedom, it shows how the council itself sets this image of man in its pastoral considerations which are also important for the presence of the Church in contemporary society. Finally, the paper engages in a practical interpretation of the conciliar image of man in our time.
Gaudium et spes, Globalization and the Developing World
Shaji G. Kochuthara
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):95-107 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.013
In its current meaning, the concept of "globalization" had its origin in 1970s. However, Gaudium et spes visualizes the need of an interconnected world, where all are related to each other in fraternity and solidarity. This paper, drawing inspiration from the constitution Gaudium et spes and subsequent Church documents, analzes globalization, especially from the perspective of the developing world. As an ideal of interconnectedness of peoples, nations and cultures, globalization offers great possibilities. To realize this, globalization has to be rooted in the principle of solidarity, especially solidarity with the poor, the cultures and the ecology....
Christian-Moslem Relations after the Second Vatican Council
Luboš Kropáček
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):115-122 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.015
The proposed paper reflects on the relations among the three great world religions confessing one God - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - and their development since Vatican Council II up to the present. It notes that the Council denoted an important turn in the Catholic Church's attitude to the other two religions and exhorted Christians to view them positively. This message is contained especially in the pastoral constitution Gaudium et spes and the declaration Nostra aetate. The paper shows how the legacy of these documents is or is not realized in subsequent practice. It informs of initiatives supporting good relationships in various ways, ensuing...
From Church Scrutinizing the Signs of the Times (GS 4) to Church Discerning (EG 43)
Pavel Ambros
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):136-149 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.017
The paper reacts to the experienced need to embody faith in life, which implies also the need to interconnect theology and pastoral care. This requirement was loudly stated at the Second Vatican Council, which invites the Christian to scrutinize the signs of the times. The Church can be perceived as a great ship that is to provide security for humanity and bring salvation. The contemporary human being sails the sea of the world buffeted between hope and anxiety. Precisely this buffeting can be viewed as a sign of the times. But it is apparently insufficient to stop at it. Scrutinizing signs of the times is linked to a perceptiveness for the presence...
The Catholic Church through the Eyes of Contemporary Czechs and Contemporary Czechs through the Eyes of the Catholic Church Between Distrust and Expectation
David Václavík
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):157-163 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.019
Czech society is traditionally viewed as strongly anti-Catholic and at the same time highly secularized or even atheistic. However, the two claims, though they are frequently regarded as almost a priory, conceal a number of questions and misunderstandings and reflect a stereotypical understanding of the relationship between religion and modern Czech society. The paper focuses first on a clarification of the fairly complex and multi-layered relations of Czech society to the Catholic Church, especially in the second half of the 20th century. It points out a fairly fundamental shift occurring in the last twenty years, when a growing number of Czechs and...
The Idea of Cooperativism from a Social-Theoretical Perspective with Particular Emphasis on Catholic Social Teaching
Marián Sekerák
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):179-194 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.021
In the paper I elucidate the basic traits of cooperativism from the perspective of the social sciences. Its historical roots, especially in the thought of Robert Owen and V. I. Lenin, are described, together with the mainstream cooperative model presented by the UN and the European Union. Forasmuch as teaching on the role of cooperative entrepreneurship in the contemporary capitalist economy is an integral part of Catholic Social Doctrine, particular emphasis is placed on the teaching of the popes on cooperatives.

Christian Magazine on Czech Television and Topics from the Constitution Gaudium et spes
Bedřich Jetelina
Caritas et veritas 2016, 6(1):204-212 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2016.023
The paper analyzes episodes of the Christian Magazine programme broadcast in 2012-2015 by the public service Czech Television. The content analysis aims to find out how and to what extent this news and reporting programme reflects the "particularly urgent needs characterizing the present age" mentioned in the second part of the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World Gaudium et spes. "Particularly urgent needs characterizing the present age" are the main topic of only 23% of the reports broadcast during the investigated period, most of them dealing with cultural issues. Despite the restrictions of content analysis as compared to qualitative...
