Is School Education Meaningful If It Does Not Lead Pupils to Seek Meaning?

Ludmila Muchová

Caritas et veritas 2014, 4(2):26-40 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2014.022

The paper links the characteristic of postmodern European society, the changed demands on pupil performance in EU schools and the logotherapeutic view of the human being seeking the meaning of life. The author states the discrepancy between the economic and political pressure on school systems to prepare pupils for the future competitiveness of their countries in the global labour market and human effort to fill life with spiritual, nonmaterial values. She points out that this happens even though the spiritual and social climate of schools can be perceived and changed with self-evaluation tools.

A Paean to Narration, or Narrative Paths of Educating to Values

Helena Zbudilová

Caritas et veritas 2014, 4(2):50-59 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2014.024

The paper deals with the narrative method as a possible way of educating to values. The story and its effect on humans has since the second half of the 20th century been a major discussion topic of philosophy, theology, psychology, literary theory and cultural anthropology. From the pedagogical point of view the study emphasizes the reader's involved entering the story in the spirit of so-called rehabilitation of narration in the didactic process. Physical, psychological, social and spiritual integrity of the unity of an individual existence can be attained by means of stories which allow for educational effect even in the postmodern period.

Cultural Animation - Philosophical Grounding and Practical Use

Anna Dudová, Michal Kaplánek, Richard Macků

Caritas et veritas 2014, 4(2):69-77 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2014.026

The team of authors from the Department of Pedagogy at the Faculty of Theology, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, follow up on their article The Pluriform Phenomenon of Animation from 2011 and M. Kaplánek's monograph Animation from 2013. While in their publications so far the authors strove rather to specify the concept of "animation" and present the individual lines of animation, this study deals primarily with so-called cultural animation which has become an educational method, and with its use in pedagogical practice. An example of using animation is the programme for animator formation employed by Salesians in Slovakia. This programme...

Values and Evaluation from the Point of View of Psychopathology and Psychotherapy

Marie Lhotová

Caritas et veritas 2014, 4(2):91-104 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2014.028

Examining what are values and reflecting on how important the discussion concerning them is in psychotherapy is fairly acute from the point of view of psychotherapeutic work, especially since values find expression in the attitudes and ideologies of both patients and therapists. However, the views of psychotherapeutic work with values, value system and individual value hierarchies diverge. The paper aims to analyse the possibilities of psychotherapeutic intervention within the framework of examining the individual premises of value judgement. It mentions in detail the existential-analytic approach to value, whose explanatory framework allows for construing...

Forgiveness on the Hospital Bed. The Importance of Forgiveness for Patients in the Context of Hospital Chaplaincy

Dominik Opatrný, Marta Hošťálková

Caritas et veritas 2014, 4(2):135-141 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2014.032

Forgiveness supports medical treatment, increases the quality of life of patients, and reduces their anxiety. This paper deals with certain specific aspects of the process of forgiving by patients. On one hand, it presents illness as an opportunity to forgive. On the other hand, it also points out the obstacles stemming from the illness. These obstacles may be easier to overcome with the help of a professional hospital chaplain, whose role in the process of forgiving is discussed, as well as the ethical context of her activity.

The Principle of Sustainable Development in Catholic Social Teaching

Miroslav Kněz, Roman Míčka

Caritas et veritas 2014, 4(2):154-165 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2014.034

The paper presents the context and development of the concept of sustainable development and asks to what extent it is applied and reflected in Catholic social teaching and the broader context of Christian ethics. It follows the development of the concept in the course of three UN conferences devoted to the environment (Stockholm, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg) as well as in the subsequent expert and ideological debate concerning the content and implications of the concept. It further examines the topic of development and sustainable development in the documents of the social teaching of the Catholic Church and in Christian social-ethical thought, its...
