Role dobrovolnictví a buddhistické etiky pro reakci na pandemii covidu-19 v Thajsku

Thajsko bylo první zemí mimo Čínu, kde byl zjištěn případ covidu-19, když do země vstoupil turista z Číny v lednu 2020. Přesto je zde až doposud celková úmrtnost na covid-19 mnohem nižší než ve většině ostatních zemí. Jaké jsou faktory tohoto úspěchu? V tomto příspěvku se zaměřujeme na roli dobrovolnictví a tvrdíme, že jeho bezproblémová integrace do thajského systému veřejné zdravotní péče je založena na převážně buddhistické náboženské kultuře v zemi a odpovídá kultivaci buddhistických ctností, jako je soucit (karuṇā) a motivace činit dobro (tham bun). Domníváme se, že buddhistická etika a její zakořenění ve společnosti jsou klíčovým faktorem, který je základem silné dobrovolnické kultury země. Naše téma řešíme průzkumem existující literatury a prováděním polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se sedmi dobrovolníky v oblasti veřejného zdraví v květnu a červnu 2022. Zabýváme se možnou námitkou, že théravádový buddhismus praktikovaný v Thajsku je individualistické náboženství, a může být tedy spíše negativním motivačním faktorem pro dobrovolnictví a účinnou reakci během pandemie.
