Ritual DIY: a self-help journey to meaning

The study outlines the theme of ritual DIY as a creative ability to improvise in situations of significant confrontation with the multiplicity of life preferences and ideas. The theoretical starting point for this perspective is Claude Lévi-Strauss's concept of wild thinking. Ritual DIY seems to be a peculiar journey towards meaning or spiritual experience despite a scientifically and technically oriented world in which both are externalities. Special attention is paid to the theme of young people intuitively exploring how to grow up in a world without binding authorities and initiatory rituals. In this respect, the text most explicitly refers to the ideas of Umberto Galimberti, which it places in the context of the work of other authors. As problematic, or even tragic, as these self-help initiations often are, on closer analysis, they also seem comprehensible and unquestionably encompass the potential of a liminal experience in which the various items of a complex human existence interact in synergy.
